About the DEI Program
UC San Diego's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Program, which is housed in the Institute of Arts and Humanities, was formally established in 2022-23. The DEI Program was established to oversee the creation and maintenance of DEI courses at UC San Diego. In response to a race-themed party organized by several UC San Diego fraternities and other events in 2010, the DEI Requirement was approved by the Chancellor and Executive Vice Chancellor in 2011. The DEI Requirement has two main goals: first, to provide all UC San Diego students the opportunity to engage critically with the experiences of racialized and ethnic groups in the United States and the nation’s long history of structural inequities, and second, to reflect on their own identities in relation to those experiences and histories. The DEI Program offers pedagogical support to faculty, graduate instructors, and other UC San Diego educators to achieve the goals set forth by the DEI requirement, both within and outside of the UC San Diego classrooms.
